"Congratulations, Katie. You've earned this." The proud face of Admiral Paris was smiling upon her as he pinned the fourth pip to her collar.
"Thank you, sir," she answered, her voice filled with excitement and joy. She'd waited for this moment all her life. "Daddy, you'd be proud," Kathryn suddenly thought with a pang of sadness.
She was now a Captain. Her ship was waiting for her in Utopia Planitia.
It was one of the happiest moments of her life. She gazed briefly up at the cloudless sky as she walked out of the building. Her dream had come true.
